In cooperation with Statistics Estonia, variables will be developed that distinguish immigrants according to the basis on which they arrived in Estonia (for example, whether a person arrived for work, studies, family migration, or asylum) and that also make it possible to track how the status of immigrants changes over time (for example, from a temporary to a permanent residence permit). The aim of this data development is to provide a more precise understanding of migrants’ migration and integration trajectories.
Using these data, we can, for example, assess how long people arriving on different grounds stay in Estonia and when they leave (data are available from 2019 onward). We can also link the grounds for arrival and changes in status to other variables, such as place of residence and workplace. This makes it possible to identify integration patterns among different migrant groups and to detect trajectories that lead to more successful integration.
Altogether, this will also enable the assessment of migration policy and the broader societal impact of policy changes, especially from the perspective of integration, and will support the development of more effective migration policy.
